Stéphane Hessel (Berlín, Alemania, 20 de octubre de 1917) diplomático, escritor, y militante político francés. Fue miembro de la resistencia francesa durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, capturado y torturado por la Gestapo, y recluso de los campos de concentración de Buchenwald y Dora-Mittelbau. Fue uno de los redactores de la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos de 1948. Su libro, Indignez vous! (¡Indignaos!), de gran popularidad durante las navidades del 2010 en Francia, con ventas de casi 1,5 millones de ejemplares. Las Protestas en España de 2011 y las Protestas en Francia de mayo de 2011, ¡Democracia Real YA! y el Movimiento de indignados 15-M se inspiran en sus ideas.


Stéphane Frédéric Hessel (born 20 October 1917) is a diplomat, ambassador, concentration camp survivor, former French Resistance fighter and BCRA agent. Born German, he became a naturalised French citizen in 1939. He participated in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948. In October 2010, his essay, Time for Outrage! (original French title: Indignez-vous!), was published in an edition of 6,000 copies. It has sold nearly 1.5 million copies in France and has been translated into Basque, Catalan, Italian, German. Greek, Portuguese, Slovenian, Spanish and Croatian. Translations into Korean, Japanese, Swedish and other languages are planned. In the United States, The Nation magazine's March 7–14, 2011 issue published the entire essay in English.

Hessel's booklet argues that the French need to again become outraged, as were those who participated in the Resistance during World War II. Hessel's reasons for personal outrage include the growing gap between the very rich and the very poor, France's treatment of its illegal immigrants, the need to re-establish a free press, the need to protect the environment, importance of protecting the French welfare system, and the plight of Palestinians, recommending that people read the September 2009 Goldstone Report. He calls for peaceful and non-violent insurrection.

Combattant de la France libre pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, puis déporté à Buchenwald, il a été secrétaire de la commission ayant élaboré à l'ONU la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme. Il est également écrivain et poète. En 2010, le livre de Stéphane Hessel, « Indignez-vous ! », devient un phénomène littéraire et un succès d'édition avec un tirage record de 950 000 exemplaires à la mi-janvier 2011. Stéphane Hessel y explique que la situation en Palestine est pour lui sa « principale indignation » dans le monde.
